Introduction: Binaural hearing is the ability to use both ears to map sounds and distinguish voices from noise, which is essential for communication. Hearing difficulties can occur due to problems in the auditory system, associated with conditions such as hearing loss. Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) is an important diagnostic tool, especially in screening.
Purpose: To analyze the values of the Binaural Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR-BI) to generate normative results of amplitude and latency in normal-hearing adults.
Method: The clinical study involved 28 participants who underwent anamnesis and audiological evaluation. Those who met the inclusion criteria were submitted to ABR-BI with 2000 stimuli, with 21.1 clicks per second, intensity of 80 dBnHL and rarefied polarity.
Results: The results of the ABR-BI, when compared with the literature, show that the difference between binaural and monaural responses in the Brainstem is not significant. The study confirms that binaural stimulation increases the amplitude of response, due to the independence of the auditory pathways. The results of this study can serve as a standard of normality for latency and amplitude of the BIC in normal-hearing adults. No significant differences were observed in wave I, III, and V latencies between the monaural and binaural responses.
Conclusion: Reference values were established for ABR-BIC in adults with normal hearing, including latency and amplitude of the Binaural Interaction Component (BIC). The measurements of the latencies and amplitudes of the ABR-BI showed similarities between the right and left ears of normal listeners.
