Quarterly update 19: VCCA2025 updates

Newsroom Computational Audiology, Mar 20

Dear all,
In this newsletter, we share the latest VCCA2025 developments. We’re thrilled to introduce a pre-VCCA symposium in Spanish, announce that the VCCA2025 call for abstracts is now open, and include a personal note reflecting on my PhD journey.

VCCA2025

We are pleased to announce our first two keynote speakers for VCCA2025!

Professor Dorothea Kolossa (TU Berlin) will present:

“Audio-visual Technologies for Inclusion: Bringing Speech Intelligibility Beyond the Limits of Hearing.”

Dorothea leads a research group at TU Berlin that, among other topics, is working on applications that use audiovisual input for highly robust speech recognition and video-based speech quality enhancement. The group uses adversarial examples to examine the robustness of deep-learning-based speech recognition.

Dr. Giovanni Di Liberto (Trinity College Dublin) will present:

“Investigating Auditory Cognition with Natural Speech and Music.”

Perception involves making sense of the world by processing a continuous flow of sensory information. The brain synchronizes its electrical activity to specific properties of sensory inputs, a phenomenon known as neural tracking. This effect is particularly remarkable in auditory perception, where neural signals track the amplitude envelope of continuous sounds—an insight that has opened new research directions, including auditory attention in multi-talker environments.

Giovanni’s research explores how speech and music processing involve both low-level acoustic properties and higher-level linguistic structures. He develops computational methodologies to disentangle neural responses from EEG recordings and applies these techniques to study language learning, development, and auditory cognition.

More highlights will be announced soon, so stay tuned!

The VCCA2025 call for abstracts is now OPEN! Below is the VCCA2025 timeline:

Important dates

  • April 25, 2025: Abstract submission deadline
  • May 14, 2025: Decision notifications (acceptance/rejection)
  • June 5, 2025: Deadline for submission of video recordings and slides
  • June 24, 2025: Deadline for registration
  • June 26-27, 2025: Conference dates

Looking forward to receiving your contributions!

Audiology in Spanish Symposium

Don’t miss this exclusive pre-conference symposium at VCCA2025 on June 14th! This unique event, organized in collaboration with Spanish-speaking audiology associations, the Computational Audiology Network, and the Ibero-American Auditory Network, offers an unparalleled opportunity to meet fellow Spanish-speaking audiology professionals from around the world. Explore cutting-edge advances, tackle key challenges, and unlock future opportunities in research, regulation, and materials in Spanish. Please fill out this form to help us organize it better.

PhD Journey: Toward AI-Assisted Teleaudiology

Dear CAN community,
With great joy, I look back on a successful defense of my Phd on ‘Toward AI-Assisted Teleaudiology’ on the 18th of March. It was a wonderful experience and overall a great journey! I am immensely thankful to everyone who has supported and encouraged me over the years.

Being part of VCCA and CAN has been an amazing “extracurricular” experience—I’ve enjoyed meeting so many people and learning about groundbreaking developments.

It’s truly inspiring to see how computational approaches and teleaudiology are evolving, and I look forward to their clinical impact in the coming years. I’m counting on your contributions!

Best,
Jan-Willem Wasmann, PhD.
