Aim: To investigate the extended pressure tympanometry (extended to -600 daPa pressure) in Children with Middle Ear Pathology and to compare the results with standart tympanometry (-400 daPa pressure) findings.
Methods: This is a prospective cohort study. As a total of 30 children (n=59 ears) with middle ear pathology participated to the study. Subjects with tympanic membrane perforation and ear malformations were excluded. First, standard tympanometry, then, extended tympanometry was conducted. The results were compared.
Results: Mean tympanic peak pressure was -173 (159) daPa with standard tympanometry while -190 (165) daPa with extended pressure tympanometry. The difference was significant (p<0.01). Classification of 3 ears were changed with Extended pressure tympanometry.
Conclusion: In children with middle ear pathology, extended (-600 daPa pressure) tympanometry provided more sensitive results than standard tympanometry and there were significant differences between the results of both measurements. The use of extended pressure values (up to -600 daPa) in tympanometry provided more sensitive and precise measurements and may make a significant contribution to the diagnosis.
