VCCA2025 update

Dear all,
In this newsletter, we share more VCCA 2025 developments. Good news—the abstract submission deadline has been extended to May 1st! VCCA2025 Registration will open on May 15! In addition, please fill out this latest survey on the Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices (KAP) among Audio-Speech Professionals regarding Artificial Intelligence!

Please note that the Audiology Pre-Conference Symposium at VCCA2025 will now take place on Saturday, June 21, 2025.

VCCA2025

We are pleased to announce two great featured talks at VCCA2025!

Malcolm Slaney, PhD
Stanford University

Talk: The Different ML/AI Techniques Being Used to Model the Auditory System

Malcolm will explore the diverse AI and machine learning methods now shaping our understanding of hearing. From biologically inspired auditory models to large-scale data-driven systems, he will unpack how modern tools are advancing the science—and the potential—of auditory modeling.

Malcolm is a pioneer in auditory research and machine perception, with decades of experience at companies like Google and Apple.

Dr. Fotios Drakopoulos
Research Fellow, Ear Institute, University College London
Talk: Modelling Neural Coding in the Auditory Brain through Large-Scale Electrophysiology and Deep Learning

Fotios will present ICNet, an auditory model that simulates neural responses in the auditory midbrain (inferior colliculus) with remarkable precision. Using large-scale neural data and deep learning, ICNet achieves over 86% accuracy in replicating auditory neural activity—opening up new opportunities for research and real-world hearing applications.

Fotios holds a PhD from Ghent University and now works with Prof. Nicholas Lesica at UCL. His research blends auditory neuroscience with machine learning to improve technologies like hearing aids and auditory diagnostics.

Stay tuned—more speaker announcements coming soon!

Survey on KAP regarding AI

We are reaching out to invite you to participate in an important survey on the Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices (KAP) among Audio-Speech Professionals regarding Artificial Intelligence. This survey is a joint initiative by the Research & Education Network in Audiology & Speech Sciences (RENAS) and the Computational Audiology Network CAN)

Completing the questionnaire will take approximately 10-15 minutes of your valuable time.
You can access the survey here: Survey Link.

Our aim is to gather comprehensive insights to guide the integration of AI tools into clinical practice, ensuring it aligns with the perspectives of professionals worldwide. This endeavor will help enhance job and data security, as well as patient health and safety.

Thank you in advance for sharing your expertise and contributing your time to this vital study.
Warm regards,

Farnaz Fathollahzadeh (RENAS)
Jan-Willem Wasmann (CAN)

New Date for the Spanish Audiology Symposium

The Audiology Pre-Conference Symposium at VCCA2025 will now take place on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at the same time previously announced.

The full program will be shared shortly and will include presentations and discussions from key figures in the Spanish-speaking audiology community.

If you work in audiology and speak Spanish, this is certainly a meeting you don’t want to miss.
