VCCA 2026 Pre-conference Workshops

We are excited to introduce the pre-conference workshops of the Virtual Conference on Computational Audiology 2026 (VCCA 2026).

These sessions are designed to provide hands-on learning experiences and in-depth perspectives on key methodological advances in the field. Led by internationally recognised researchers, the workshops will combine conceptual overviews with practical demonstrations, offering participants the opportunity to engage directly with state-of-the-art tools and approaches in computational audiology.

Below you will find detailed information about each workshop, including content, format, and speaker background. We hope these sessions will offer a valuable and stimulating addition to the VCCA 2026 programme.

Workshop 1: “From Question to Evidence: Building Your Research and Scientific Communication in Audiology”

Abstract: This workshop provides a comprehensive introduction to conducting research and communicating scientific results in audiology. Designed for early-career researchers, clinicians, and multidisciplinary professionals new to academic research, the session will guide participants through the entire research journey: from formulating a researchable question, through study design and data collection, to analyzing findings and publishing results. The workshop combines conceptual foundations with practical strategies and tools, emphasizing real-world applications in audiology. Participants will explore concrete examples throughout and leave with a comprehensive toolkit for initiating and executing their own research projects and manuscripts. No prior research experience is required.The workshop is supported by AUDITIO, Spanish Journal of Audiology, and the Spanish Association of Audiology (AEDA). Throughout the session, we will highlight and discuss selected studies published in AUDITIO to illustrate key stages of the research and publication process. In addition, we will present AUDITIO as a representative example of a journal that effectively bridges clinical practice and scientific research. This case will serve to demonstrate how such platforms can provide an accessible entry point for audiologists seeking to disseminate their work and engage with the scientific community.Biography: Natàlia Gorina-Careta is a neuroscientist and lecturer on Neuroscience and Scientific Methodology in Audiology at the BSc in General Audiology of the Universitat de Vic – Universitat Central de Catalunya (UVic–UCC). She completed her PhD at the Brainlab – Cognitive Neuroscience Research Group, focusing on sound processing along the auditory hierarchy and has held postdoctoral positions at the Sant Joan de Déu Research Institute and the University of Barcelona. She has collaborated with laboratories across Europe, contributed to 12 research projects, and published in top-quartile journals. Her research focuses on subcortical auditory processing and how genetic and environmental factors modulate the development of sound processing in newborns during their first two years of life.Helia Relaño-Iborra is a postdoctoral researcher with a dual position at the Eriksholm Research Centre (Denmark) and the University of Rochester (US). Her research focuses on the perception of speech by people with and without hearing impairment. To understand the mechanisms underlying the effortful and degraded perception of speech that is commonly observed in older people and individuals with hearing impairment, Helia uses psychoacoustic experiments, physiological measures such as pupillometry and computational auditory models. Helia received her Ph.D. degree from the Technical University of Denmark where she is still actively involved in supervision of master and Ph.D. students. She is also the editor in chief of AUDITIO, the Spanish Journal of Audiology.

Workshop 2: “A Practical Introduction to Machine Learning for Hearing Science”

Abstract: From models of the auditory brain to audio enhancement algorithms and new clinical tools, this tutorial will provide a high-level overview of the ways machine learning is transforming hearing research. Examples will illustrate core concepts in machine learning and emphasize practical considerations for incorporating these methods. The session will consist of a presentation followed by an interactive demonstration with Jupyter notebooks. No programming experience is assumed but basic familiarity with Python or MATLAB will be helpful to get the most out of the hands-on portion. All tutorial materials will be made available on Github.

Biography: Mark is a postdoc in the Hearing Systems Research Section of DTU’s Department of Health Technology. He works on machine learning models of human hearing, aiming to understand how our ears and environment shape perception. His research computationally links peripheral neural coding and auditory perception to better understand and treat hearing loss. Mark holds a PhD in Computational Neuroscience from MIT.

The workshop will consist of a presentation followed by a code demo using a Google Colab notebook. The interactive notebook is available at https://github.com/msaddler/auditory_machine_learning and can be run directly from a web browser. The only requirement is a Google account. No software preparation or file downloads are required. The presentation slides will be shared after the workshop.

Workshop 3: “Computational Models of the Auditory Periphery: From Normal Hearing to Impairment”

By Ms. Annesya Banerjee, Program in Speech and Hearing Bioscience and Technology, Harvard University (USA); Department of Brain and Cognitive Science, MIT (USA)

Abstract: This workshop will provide hands-on experience with computational approaches for modeling normal and impaired auditory peripheral processing. The session will begin with an overview of auditory peripheral function and current modeling strategies, followed by an interactive component using Jupyter notebooks that will enable participants to generate their own simulations of auditory processing. Some familiarity with the biology of hearing is helpful but not required, and no prior coding experience is necessary.

Biography: Annesya is a 5th-year PhD candidate in the Speech and Hearing Bioscience and Technology program at Harvard University, where her research focuses on computational modeling of cochlear implant–mediated auditory perception. Her long-term research goal is to use machine learning models for developing better cochlear implants. Before joining her PhD, she graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering from Jadavpur University, India, specializing in signal processing and machine learning, where she worked on drone-based sound source localization and acoustic array systems for medical and humanitarian applications. During her time as a research scientist intern at Meta Reality Labs, she also developed machine learning models for reference-free SNR prediction and for perceptually guided evaluation of generated speech and contributed to evaluation algorithms underlying Meta’s Conversation Focus technology in smart glasses.
